About This Trail

The Alum Cave Trail provides the most scenic route to Mount LeConte, the third-highest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains. The trail climbs through old-growth forest, crosses Arch Rock via a natural tunnel, passes beneath the dramatic overhang of Alum Cave Bluffs, and continues along exposed ridges to the summit area. LeConte Lodge, accessible only by foot, offers overnight accommodations in a remarkable mountaintop setting. The trail’s diversity—from cool creek bottoms to wind-swept ridges—showcases the Smokies’ ecological richness. Day hikers often turn back at Alum Cave Bluffs while stronger hikers continue to the summit for one of the park’s most rewarding long day hikes.
