About This Trail

Andrews Bald is the highest grassy bald in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a flower-filled meadow at 5,920 feet with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. The Forney Ridge Trail climbs from Clingmans Dome through spruce-fir forest before emerging at the open bald, where flame azaleas and Catawba rhododendrons create spectacular displays in June. The views extend across the wild southern Smokies, with Fontana Lake visible in the valley below. The maintained grassy area creates a sense of openness rare in the heavily forested park. This is the most accessible high-elevation bald in the Smokies, combining alpine atmosphere with spectacular wildflower displays.
