About This Trail

This section of the Appalachian Trail from Carvers Gap to Grassy Ridge Bald offers one of the most spectacular hiking experiences in the Southeast. The trail crosses the open expanses of Round Bald, Jane Bald, and Grassy Ridge, providing unobstructed 360-degree views of the Appalachian Mountains stretching to the horizon. These treeless balds are covered with native grasses and heath shrubs, creating an alpine-like environment unique to this region. The trail passes through the Highlands of Roan, one of the largest grassy bald ecosystems in the world. Spring brings rare wildflowers including Gray’s lily, while summer sees spectacular flame azalea blooms. The exposed ridgeline demands respect for changing weather conditions.
