About This Trail
Venturing into the vast Atchafalaya Basin, this trail explores one of America’s largest river swamps through a landscape of towering cypress trees, quiet bayous, and rich wildlife habitat. Water levels fluctuate seasonally, so the trail experience changes throughout the year from dry forest walks to wetland adventures. The basin is renowned for its crawfish, alligators, and exceptional birding, with thousands of wading birds and neotropical migrants passing through annually.
Getting There
From Breaux Bridge, take LA-31 south to LA-347. Continue south on LA-347 for approximately 10 miles to Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge access road on the right. Follow refuge signs to the main trailhead parking area, which may close during high water periods.
