About This Trail

Backbone Rock Trail leads to one of Tennessee’s most unusual geological formations—a narrow rock fin through which a road tunnel was carved in the early 1900s. The trail climbs over the ‘backbone’ of rock, providing views of the surrounding forest and the historic tunnel below. Often called the ‘shortest tunnel in the world,’ Backbone Rock has become an iconic Tennessee landmark. The trail continues into the Beaverdam Creek Roadless Area, where hikers can extend their adventure through pristine forest. Spring brings abundant wildflowers, while fall offers stunning foliage against the gray limestone formations. The recreation area includes picnic facilities and swimming holes in Beaverdam Creek.
