About This Trail

The Backbone Trail traverses the heart of the Kisatchie Hills Wilderness, offering some of Louisiana’s most dramatic terrain with rocky ridges, deeply carved creek valleys, and sandstone bluffs reaching up to 350 feet in elevation. This rugged route rewards hikers with sweeping overlooks, solitude, and a true wilderness experience rare in the Deep South. The trail is excellent for backpacking, with primitive camping allowed throughout the wilderness area.
