About This Trail

Bear Rocks Preserve Trail explores one of the most unusual landscapes in West Virginia—a high-altitude plateau with windswept rock outcrops, heath barrens, and bogs resembling terrain found hundreds of miles to the north. The trail crosses open expanses of blueberry and huckleberry bushes, passes sphagnum bogs, and leads to dramatic rock formations shaped by wind and ice. The preserve protects rare plant communities and provides habitat for northern bird species at the southern edge of their range. Views from the rocks extend across the Dolly Sods Wilderness to distant mountains. This otherworldly landscape is particularly stunning at sunrise when mist fills the valleys below.
