About This Trail
Black Mountain Trail climbs to Kentucky’s highest point at 4,145 feet, offering hikers the opportunity to stand atop the commonwealth’s roof. The trail ascends through diverse Appalachian forest, passing through several ecological zones as elevation increases. Near the summit, the forest takes on a northern character with species typically found much farther north. The summit area has been impacted by mining activity, but the hike through the forest provides excellent scenery and wildlife viewing opportunities. Standing at Kentucky’s highest point offers a sense of accomplishment and connection to the Appalachian highlands that define eastern Kentucky.
