About This Trail

The Blackwater Falls Boardwalk Trail provides easy access to one of West Virginia’s most iconic natural attractions—the 57-foot Blackwater Falls. The amber-colored water, stained by tannic acid from fallen hemlock and red spruce needles, plunges over a wide rock ledge creating a dramatic cascade. A series of boardwalks and 214 steps lead to multiple viewing platforms at various levels, allowing visitors to experience the falls from different perspectives. The falls are spectacular year-round, from spring’s high water flows to winter’s ice formations. Accessible viewing is available from the upper platform for those unable to navigate the stairs.
