About This Trail

The Jeff Friend Trail at Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge provides access to one of the last undeveloped stretches of Alabama’s Gulf Coast, crossing through maritime forest and coastal scrub to pristine beach and dune habitats. The trail honors a local conservationist who helped establish the refuge, protecting critical habitat for migratory birds, nesting sea turtles, and the endangered Alabama beach mouse. The path passes through diverse coastal plant communities, from dense live oak forest to open dune fields with sea oats waving in the Gulf breeze. The beach at trail’s end offers solitude rare on the heavily developed Gulf coast, making this a special destination for those seeking wild coastal scenery.
