About This Trail

Botany Bay Plantation Heritage Preserve protects a remarkable stretch of Edisto Island coastline where shell-covered beaches, bleached boneyard trees, and pristine maritime habitats create one of South Carolina’s most photogenic landscapes. The walk to the beach passes through maritime forest and along impoundments that attract diverse birdlife before emerging at a shoreline unlike any other in the state. The boneyard beach—where erosion has killed coastal trees, leaving sculptural remains—provides endless photography opportunities, while the shell-strewn sand reveals treasures with every tide. This is one of South Carolina’s most special coastal places, combining natural beauty with a sense of timeless wildness increasingly rare along the developed coast.
