About This Trail

The Braziel Creek Trail leads to a dramatic rock shelter—a massive overhanging bluff that provided shelter for Native Americans for thousands of years—and a scenic waterfall on Braziel Creek. The trail descends into a canyon through forest of hemlock, beech, and tulip poplar, crossing the creek multiple times before reaching the impressive rockhouse. The waterfall tumbles over mossy ledges into a pool below the shelter, creating a magical atmosphere especially after rain. The Bankhead National Forest’s canyon country offers terrain unexpected in Alabama, with deep gorges, towering bluffs, and old-growth forest remnants. This trail showcases the region’s natural diversity in a moderate half-day adventure.
