About This Trail

Brierfield Ironworks Historical State Park preserves the impressive ruins of a Confederate iron furnace that supplied material for the Southern war effort. The trail winds through the forested park, passing the towering stone furnace stack, associated structures, and the scenic Cahaba River that powered the operation. The furnace operated from 1862 until Union cavalry destroyed it in 1865, and the ruins stand as atmospheric reminders of Alabama’s industrial history and the Civil War’s reach into the Deep South. Beyond the historical features, the trails explore diverse forest habitats with abundant wildlife. The park’s location along the Cahaba, Alabama’s longest free-flowing river, adds natural beauty to the historical significance.
