About This Trail
Bucks Pocket State Park occupies a dramatic box canyon carved into Sand Mountain, and the South Sauty Creek Trail explores this rugged terrain. The trail follows the creek through the canyon, passing towering rock formations, seasonal waterfalls, and lush vegetation nourished by the protected microclimate. The canyon walls rise steeply on both sides, creating a sense of isolation and natural grandeur. Rock outcrops provide excellent viewpoints, while the creek offers cooling stops on warm days. The park was historically used by Cherokee leader Buck as a hiding place, adding historical interest to the natural beauty. Spring brings abundant wildflowers to the canyon floor, and the fall color display is spectacular.
