About This Trail

The Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge protects critical habitat along Alabama’s most biodiverse river, including the only known populations of the endangered Cahaba lily. The Piper Interpretive Trail follows the river bluffs, descending to the water’s edge where in late May and early June, shoals explode with the spectacular white blooms of the lilies. Beyond the seasonal lily display, the trail explores diverse habitats supporting numerous rare and endemic species. The Cahaba River system harbors more fish species per mile than any other river in North America, and the surrounding forests support diverse wildlife. This trail provides intimate access to one of the South’s most remarkable natural treasures.
