About This Trail

Castle Rock Trail leads through massive boulder fields to dramatic rock formations perched on the rim of the New River Gorge. The trail winds between house-sized boulders, through narrow passages, and past overhanging rock walls before reaching the castle-like rock formations at the cliff edge. Views from the rocks overlook the deep gorge and the New River below. This adventure-style trail requires some scrambling and route-finding through the boulder maze, adding excitement to the hike. The unique geology of the area creates fascinating rock formations, and the forested setting provides shade and cool temperatures even on hot summer days.
