About This Trail

Caw Caw Interpretive Center preserves a remarkable landscape where former rice plantations have been transformed into some of the Lowcountry’s finest wildlife habitat. The trail system winds through diverse wetland environments, from flooded former rice fields to swamp forest to upland hammocks, with interpretive elements explaining both the ecological recovery and the complex history of rice cultivation. Alligators, wading birds, and countless other species thrive in these managed wetlands, while the remnant infrastructure—dikes, canals, and trunk gates—reveals the engineering sophistication of the rice industry. This park provides profound insights into both Lowcountry ecology and the landscape’s transformation from plantation agriculture to conservation.
