About This Trail
Chained Rock Trail leads to one of Kentucky’s most unusual landmarks—a massive boulder literally chained to the mountainside overlooking the town of Pineville. According to local legend, the chains were installed in 1933 to prevent the rock from rolling down and destroying the town below. While the chains are largely symbolic, they add character to this already scenic overlook. The trail climbs through Pine Mountain State Resort Park, passing through mixed hardwood forest before reaching the rock and its commanding views of the Cumberland Mountain valley. The chains and overlook have become an iconic symbol of the region.
