About This Trail

Charlies Bunion is one of the Great Smoky Mountains’ most distinctive viewpoints, a rocky outcrop jutting from the main ridge with dramatic views into the wild heart of the park. The trail follows the Appalachian Trail from Newfound Gap, traversing the park’s main divide through spruce-fir forest and heath balds. The bunion itself—named for Charlie Conner’s bunion-like foot protrusion—offers exposed scrambling and stunning photography opportunities. The route passes The Jumpoff junction, which adds another dramatic viewpoint for those with extra energy. This is one of the essential Smokies hikes, combining high-country atmosphere with genuine rock outcrop drama.
