About This Trail
Chattahoochee Trail is an easy 1.5-mile loop at Chattahoochee State Park in Houston County, Alabama, that combines several short paths to create a diverse nature walk. The trail winds through a historic Civilian Conservation Corps area, passes through marshy wetlands, traverses a protected gopher tortoise habitat, and crosses near the park dam. This variety of ecosystems within a short distance makes the trail an excellent educational experience for families and nature enthusiasts. Interpretive opportunities abound, from learning about the CCC’s role in developing Alabama’s state parks to observing the threatened gopher tortoise in its natural habitat. The wetland sections attract various waterfowl and wading birds, while the upland areas support deer and other woodland wildlife. Benches along the route provide resting spots for observing the diverse natural features.
