About This Trail

The Cheaha Wilderness surrounds Alabama’s highest point, and the High Country Loop explores this dramatic mountain landscape. The trail climbs through forest of pine and hardwood to rocky overlooks with views stretching across the Talladega Mountains and beyond. At 2,407 feet, Cheaha Mountain is Alabama’s rooftop, and the surrounding wilderness preserves a landscape of rocky outcrops, mountain streams, and diverse forest communities. The loop can be combined with the Pinhoti Trail and Odum Scout Trail for extended adventures, or hiked as a challenging day trip. The stone CCC-era observation tower at Cheaha Point provides 360-degree views that on clear days extend to distant horizons. This is quintessential Southern Appalachian hiking at its finest.
