About This Trail

The Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail at Lake Martin offers surprisingly rugged terrain for central Alabama, with rocky outcrops, steep climbs, and panoramic lake views reminiscent of mountain hiking. The trail traverses a ridge above the lake, passing numerous overlooks where hikers can rest and enjoy the sweeping vistas of Lake Martin’s island-studded waters. The challenging terrain includes rock scrambles and significant elevation changes that provide a genuine workout. Spring wildflowers dot the rocky slopes, while autumn brings spectacular color to the diverse forest canopy. This trail proves that rewarding hiking experiences exist beyond Alabama’s northern mountains, offering adventure in an unexpected location.
