About This Trail

The Cloudland Trail leads from the historic site of the Cloudland Hotel to Roan High Bluff, one of the finest overlooks in the southern Appalachians. The trail passes through spruce-fir forest, a rare ecosystem found only at the highest elevations in the region, before emerging at the rocky bluff with sweeping views. The name comes from the frequent clouds that swirl around and below the bluff, creating a dramatic scene of standing above the clouds. This trail provides insight into the area’s tourism history, when the grand Cloudland Hotel attracted visitors from across the country to experience the mountain air and spectacular scenery. Interpretive signs explain the area’s natural and human history.
