About This Trail

The Conecuh Trail traverses the Conecuh National Forest, and the Blue Spring Loop offers an excellent introduction to this remarkable ecosystem. The trail passes through open longleaf pine savanna—one of the most endangered ecosystems in North America—maintained by prescribed fire that encourages diverse understory plants. Blue Spring emerges from the sandy soil, creating a clear pool surrounded by lush vegetation. The forest supports populations of gopher tortoises, red-cockaded woodpeckers, and numerous other species dependent on longleaf pine habitat. The relatively flat terrain makes for easy hiking, while the unique ecosystem provides constant natural interest. Spring wildflowers are particularly spectacular in the fire-maintained savannas.
