About This Trail
This elevated boardwalk loop winds through Congaree National Park’s remarkable old-growth bottomland hardwood forest, one of the largest intact examples remaining in North America. Towering loblolly pines, bald cypress, and numerous hardwood species create a multi-layered canopy that supports exceptional biodiversity. The park holds national and state champion trees of numerous species, and walking beneath these giants provides humbling perspective on what forests once covered the Southeast. The boardwalk protects visitors from the frequently flooded forest floor while providing intimate access to this remarkable ecosystem. Wildlife includes feral pigs, deer, wild turkeys, and numerous bird species, while the nighttime synchronous firefly display in late May is world-famous.
