About This Trail

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary protects the largest remaining stand of ancient bald cypress in North America, with some trees over 600 years old. The 2.25-mile boardwalk meanders through this cathedral-like forest, past massive cypress trunks and through diverse habitats ranging from wet prairie to pine flatwoods. The sanctuary hosts the largest wood stork nesting colony in the United States, and the boardwalk provides excellent viewing of these endangered birds along with alligators, otters, and countless other species. The experience of walking among these ancient giants, surrounded by the sounds and sights of an intact Florida ecosystem, is profoundly moving. Operated by the National Audubon Society, this sanctuary represents conservation at its finest.
