About This Trail
The Dawkins Line Rail Trail follows an abandoned railroad corridor through the mountains of eastern Kentucky, passing through multiple tunnels and offering scenic views of the surrounding hills. The 36-mile trail traverses remote terrain, providing a glimpse into the region’s railroad and coal mining heritage. The tunnels add adventure and historical interest to the hike, while the railroad grade ensures relatively gentle terrain despite the mountainous setting. The trail passes through several small communities where services may be available. This developing trail system continues to expand, eventually connecting multiple counties in eastern Kentucky.
