About This Trail

The West Fork Loop explores the Little River corridor within DeSoto State Park, following the river through forests of hemlock, mountain laurel, and hardwood. The trail passes numerous rapids and cascades, rock outcrops with river views, and through habitats ranging from moist river bottoms to dry ridgetops. The Little River is unique as one of the few rivers in America that flows entirely atop a mountain, creating distinctive habitats and scenery. Swimming holes along the route provide refreshing stops during summer months, while autumn brings spectacular color to the diverse forest canopy. The varied terrain offers a moderate workout with enough elevation change to provide varied perspectives of the river valley.
