Devil's Millhopper Geological State Park Trail

Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park preserves one of Florida’s most dramatic geological features—a massive sinkhole 120 feet deep and 500 feet wide, created when the roof of an underground limestone cavern collapsed thousands of years ago. A wooden staircase of 232 steps descends into this natural amphitheater, where the cooler, moister environment supports a lush rainforest-like ecosystem dramatically different from the surrounding uplands. Small streams cascade over the sinkhole’s rim, creating waterfalls that nourish the diverse plant community below. Fossils of ancient marine creatures and land animals have been discovered in the sinkhole’s walls and floor. This unique geological feature provides insight into Florida’s limestone foundation and the forces that continue to shape the landscape.
