About This Trail

Elakala Falls Trail leads to a series of four beautiful waterfalls on Shay Run as it plunges into Blackwater Canyon. The first falls is easily accessible via a short trail, while the lower falls require more challenging hiking. Each cascade has its own character, with the water tumbling over dark sandstone ledges stained by tannins from the surrounding spruce forest. The amber-colored water that gives Blackwater its name creates a unique visual effect against the dark rock. The trail passes through northern hardwood forest with spruce and hemlock, providing a boreal atmosphere unusual for this latitude. Photography opportunities abound at each of the falls.
