About This Trail

The Elk River Trail follows the beautiful Elk River through the mountains of central West Virginia, passing waterfalls, interesting rock formations, and through diverse forest communities. The trail uses portions of abandoned rail grades and forest roads, providing relatively easy walking along the river corridor. Several waterfalls cascade into the river along the route, and rock outcrops provide scenic viewpoints. The Elk River supports excellent fishing, and numerous access points allow anglers to reach favorite spots. This developing trail system continues to expand, eventually connecting Charleston to the highlands.
