About This Trail
First Landing State Park preserves the site where English colonists first set foot in Virginia in 1607, along with remarkable examples of coastal ecosystems rarely found this far north. The Cape Henry Trail and connecting paths wind through cypress swamps draped in Spanish moss, over dunes, and through maritime forest to the Chesapeake Bay. The park’s mix of southern and northern ecosystems creates unusual diversity, with bald cypress, Spanish moss, and live oaks growing alongside northern species. The trails are mostly flat and accessible, while the historical significance adds depth to the natural beauty. Beach access provides opportunities for swimming and beachcombing. This is Virginia’s most popular state park, offering accessible natural beauty within the Virginia Beach urban area.
