About This Trail

The Foothills Trail follows the Chattooga River through some of the most remote and beautiful terrain in the Southeast, a Wild and Scenic River corridor that served as the setting for the film Deliverance. This section of the 77-mile Foothills Trail traverses rugged terrain alongside the tumbling river, passing impressive rapids, quiet pools, and lush riverside vegetation. The challenging hike rewards experienced backpackers with genuine wilderness solitude and constantly changing river scenery. Day hikers can access portions from various trailheads, while through-hikers experience the full majesty of this protected river corridor. The combination of Wild and Scenic River designation and National Recreation Trail status ensures this landscape remains wild for future generations.
