About This Trail

Fort Morgan State Historic Site preserves a massive brick fortification that played crucial roles in the War of 1812, Civil War, and both World Wars. The trail system explores the fort’s impressive bastions and casemates, then continues along the beach and through maritime forest to provide diverse coastal hiking. The Battle of Mobile Bay, where Admiral Farragut famously declared ‘Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead,’ occurred in the waters visible from the fort’s ramparts. Beyond the history, the trails offer excellent bird watching, especially during spring and fall migration when the fort serves as a landfall for exhausted migrants. Beach access provides opportunities for shelling, swimming, and observing coastal wildlife.
