About This Trail
Fort Mountain State Park takes its name from an 855-foot-long ancient stone wall of unknown origin that crowns the mountain’s summit. The Stone Wall Trail explores this archaeological mystery while providing spectacular overlooks of the Cohutta Mountains and Rich Mountain Wilderness. Theories about the wall’s builders range from pre-Columbian Native Americans to Welsh explorers, but its true origin remains debated. The loop trail passes multiple viewpoints, each offering different perspectives of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The park also features a beautiful mountain lake, additional hiking trails, and one of the region’s most scenic drives along its approach road. Interpretive signs along the trail discuss the wall’s history and the various theories about its construction.
