About This Trail

Fort Toulouse-Fort Jackson State Historic Site preserves the remains of two forts built at the strategic confluence of the Coosa and Tallapoosa rivers. The French established Fort Toulouse in 1717 to trade with Native Americans and counter British expansion, while Fort Jackson was built in 1814 following Andrew Jackson’s victory over the Creek Nation. The trail system explores both fort sites and the surrounding natural areas, passing through forest that has reclaimed the battlefields and trading grounds. Reconstructed buildings and interpretive displays bring the history to life, while the riverside setting provides scenic beauty and opportunities for wildlife viewing. This is one of Alabama’s most historically layered sites, where centuries of human drama unfolded.
