About This Trail

Forty Acre Rock Heritage Preserve protects one of the largest granite flatrock outcrops in the Southeast, a unique ecosystem supporting numerous rare and endemic plants adapted to the harsh conditions. The trail leads to the expansive rock surface where solution pools, lichen gardens, and seasonal plant communities create a landscape dramatically different from the surrounding forest. The open rock provides sweeping views across the South Carolina Piedmont, while the diverse edge habitats support interesting wildlife. Spring brings spectacular wildflower displays as the pools fill with blooming plants, while the rock’s heat creates different conditions throughout the year. This accessible preserve showcases one of South Carolina’s most distinctive natural communities.
