About This Trail
George L. Smith State Park preserves a hauntingly beautiful cypress swamp surrounding a 412-acre mill pond, creating one of Georgia’s most atmospheric hiking destinations. The trail winds along the pond’s edge and through the swamp on elevated boardwalks, passing massive bald cypress trees draped in Spanish moss and the park’s iconic covered bridge and 1880s grist mill. The black water reflects the cypress forest like a mirror, creating scenes of ethereal beauty that draw photographers from across the region. Canoe and kayak trails through the swamp offer an alternative perspective, while the hiking trail provides easy access to this primordial landscape. The mill complex remains operational for demonstrations, adding historical interest to the natural beauty.
