About This Trail

The Grandfather Trail traverses one of the most rugged and ecologically diverse mountains in the eastern United States, climbing over a series of rocky peaks via ladders, cables, and challenging scrambles. The route requires genuine physical effort and comfort with exposure, passing through rare and fragile ecological communities while rewarding hikers with spectacular views from multiple summits. Calloway Peak, at 5,964 feet, is the highest point on the Grandfather Mountain massif. The mountain’s unique climate supports species found nowhere else, including endemic salamanders and ice-age relict plants. This is one of the most challenging and rewarding day hikes in the Southeast, demanding respect for the mountain’s rugged character.
