About This Trail

The hike to Grassy Mountain Fire Tower in the Cohutta Wilderness offers a journey through some of Georgia’s most remote and pristine mountain terrain. The trail begins near Lake Conasauga, the highest lake in Georgia, and climbs steadily through mature hardwood forest interspersed with mountain bogs and marshy areas that support diverse wildflower communities. At the summit, a historic fire tower (when open) provides unobstructed 360-degree views of the vast Cohutta Wilderness stretching into Tennessee. Even when the tower is closed, the cleared summit area offers excellent vistas. This trail provides a genuine wilderness experience, with minimal crowds and maximum solitude. Bear activity is common in this area—store food properly and observe wildlife from a safe distance.
