About This Trail

The Greenbrier River Trail is one of the premier rail-trails in the eastern United States, following the scenic Greenbrier River for 78 miles through the heart of West Virginia. The crushed limestone surface follows the gentle grade of the former C&O Railway, passing through tunnels, over bridges, and alongside the beautiful river. The trail passes through small towns, crosses numerous streams, and provides access to the Monongahela National Forest. Historic sites, including old railway stations and ghost towns, add interest to the journey. The relatively flat grade makes this suitable for hiking and biking of all abilities, though the length requires planning for extended trips.
