About This Trail

Hanging Rock rises dramatically above the North Carolina Piedmont, an outlying peak of the Sauratown Mountains offering sweeping views from its distinctive quartzite summit. The trail climbs through diverse forest habitats before emerging at rocky overlooks where the views extend across the Dan River valley and surrounding countryside. The exposed rock formations create interesting geological features and support unique plant communities. Hanging Rock State Park offers additional trails to other peaks, waterfalls, and a lake, making this an excellent destination for extended exploration. The mountain’s isolation from the main Blue Ridge creates a distinctive hiking experience with far-reaching views across the rolling Piedmont landscape.
