About This Trail

The Hawks Nest Rail Trail follows an abandoned railroad grade along the New River through Hawks Nest State Park, passing through tunnels, over bridges, and past remnants of the area’s coal mining history. The trail provides excellent views of the New River and the rugged canyon walls, with several access points to the water. Two tunnels add adventure and historical interest to the hike. Interpretive signs explain the tragic history of the Hawks Nest Tunnel disaster, one of the worst industrial accidents in American history. The relatively flat grade makes this an easy hike with significant historical and natural interest.
