About This Trail
Hillsborough River State Park features a remarkable anomaly—Class II rapids that are unique in peninsular Florida, created where the river flows over limestone outcrops. The trail system explores this scenic river corridor, crossing the water on a suspension bridge and winding through hardwood hammocks and pine flatwoods. A reconstructed Fort Foster, a Second Seminole War fortification, adds historical interest and hosts living history programs. The rapids create a dynamic environment that supports unusual plant communities for this region, while the river corridor provides habitat for river otters, alligators, and numerous bird species. This park offers Tampa Bay residents and visitors a genuine wilderness experience within easy reach of the city.
