About This Trail

The Holston Mountain Trail runs along the crest of Holston Mountain in the Cherokee National Forest, offering spectacular views of the surrounding valleys and distant mountain ranges. This multi-use trail accommodates both hikers and equestrians, winding through oak-hickory forests and open meadows created by past fires. Rocky outcrops along the ridge provide natural viewpoints where hikers can see South Holston Lake to the north and the Watauga Valley to the south. The trail connects several backcountry areas and can be combined with other trails for extended backpacking trips. Fall color along the ridge is exceptional, and the open character of the forest allows for excellent wildlife viewing.
