About This Trail

Huntington Beach State Park preserves one of the finest remaining examples of undeveloped South Carolina coastline, with trails exploring diverse habitats from maritime forest to salt marsh to pristine beach. The Sandpiper Pond Nature Trail winds through coastal forest to wildlife-rich wetlands where alligators, wading birds, and shorebirds congregate. The beach provides miles of natural shoreline for walking, with excellent shelling and bird watching opportunities. The historic Atalaya castle, a Moorish-style winter home built by Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington, adds cultural interest to the natural beauty. This is the Grand Strand’s most significant natural area, providing a glimpse of the coast before development transformed the region.
