About This Trail
The Iron Mountain Trail traverses the Iron Mountain Backcountry Area along the Tennessee-Virginia border, offering hikers a challenging ridgeline experience with spectacular views of the Appalachian highlands. This section of the Iron Mountain Trail features rocky outcrops, dense rhododendron thickets, and mixed hardwood forests that blaze with color in autumn. The trail follows the crest of Iron Mountain, providing viewpoints where hikers can see into both Tennessee and Virginia. Wildlife sightings are common, including deer, wild turkey, and occasionally black bear. This rugged trail is best suited for experienced hikers seeking solitude in true backcountry conditions.
