About This Trail

Island Ford offers a peaceful alternative to the busier sections of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, with quiet trails winding through bottomland hardwood forests along the river’s edge. The well-maintained paths pass through stands of towering river birch and sycamore, cross seasonal streams on sturdy bridges, and reach several scenic overlooks of the Chattahoochee. The unit serves as headquarters for the national recreation area, with informative exhibits about the river’s ecology and history. Wildlife sightings are common, including white-tailed deer, great blue herons, kingfishers, and the occasional river otter. The gentle terrain makes this an excellent choice for families with young children or anyone seeking a relaxed nature walk close to Atlanta.
