About This Trail

The Hiwassee Section of the John Muir National Recreation Trail follows the scenic Hiwassee River through the Cherokee National Forest, offering easy riverside hiking with beautiful views. The trail passes through forest along the river, with numerous access points to the water for fishing or simply enjoying the scenery. The Hiwassee is a tailwater fishery below the dam, providing excellent trout fishing year-round. The gentle terrain makes this suitable for families, and the river setting offers cool temperatures during summer months. This section of the John Muir Trail can be combined with other sections for extended through-hiking.
