About This Trail
Jonathan Dickinson State Park protects 11,500 acres of diverse Southeast Florida habitats, including pine flatwoods, sand pine scrub, mangrove swamps, and the wild Loxahatchee River—Florida’s first federally designated Wild and Scenic River. The trail system offers over 12 miles of paths ranging from easy nature walks to challenging backcountry routes. The Kitching Creek Trail winds through pristine scrub habitat where endangered Florida scrub-jays can be observed, while boat tours travel the river to Trapper Nelson’s camp, the homestead of a legendary local character known as the ‘Wildman of the Loxahatchee.’ Hobe Mountain, an ancient sand dune, provides the highest natural point on Florida’s Atlantic coast south of Cape Canaveral, with views extending to the ocean.
